Katherine Hallgarten

Katherine Hallgarten

Katherine works pieces of British native woods into simple and elegantly stylish bowls, platters and boards. Respecting the natural beauty of the wood brought out by turning on a lathe, her bowls are simple forms without ornament. The different lines and colours of favourite woods such as Cherry, Beech, Walnut and Elm all enhanced by her touch. Each one is hand finished with matt oil, a food-safe finish, suitable for sufferers of nut allergies. “I try to make bowls as my clients wish them to be. Often I will make a bowl out of wood from a well loved tree, so that the tree can live on after its natural death. All of my bowls are for everyday use for fruit, salad, cheese, or bread. As you use them they will gain the marks and patina of your household, they are not intended to be marooned on a shelf as an ornament.”

Moving Architecture
Moving Architecture

Moving Architecture: Ed Frith (Architect), Caroline Salem (Choreographer)

Moving Architecture places the moving body at the centre of the design process. This combines with a commitment to delve deeply into the specific history and culture of both site and client. Our designs seek to create a distinctive grain and structure which supports the movement of the lives embedded within the project. Rigour and delicacy in detail, combines with transformable spaces. A dialogue between ‘outside’ and ‘inside’, with skins that blend with the environment of the building, draw the movement of light, air and landscape into a dynamic weave that invites cradles and provokes people who live, work or just pass through their buildings.

Joux Joux

Joux Joux evolved as a pairing of east London creatives Lucy Arnott and Alison Jones. Launched in 2009, the design duo fused their education in fine arts and textile design, with their passion for beautifully crafted footwear to create a boutique brand that offers women classic, yet contemporary designs. Described in the press as 'ones to watch' and 'a new label to love', Joux Joux achieved early success with their covetable collections. Their first range featured shoes and boots, made from woven recycled audio cassette tape. Since their debut, the duo continue to take inspiration and source products from various creative industries, offering their customers something unusual. In June 2010, from a base of over 100 applicants, Joux Joux were selected to represent the very best developing talent from the UK at MICAM, the footwear industry flagship show in Milan.Showcasing their SS11 collection at the event they successfully expanded their wholesale business, bringing Joux Joux to more customers around the globe. Passion, quality and ethical production is at the heart of the Joux Joux label. Working with traditional family-run factories in Italy, the collections are made in small quantities and are exquisitely hand finished, each pair comes with a dust bag and an illustrated canvas tote. Joux Joux are currently training in the art of shoe making and in the future will be offering handmade styles alongside their Made In Italy range.

Hampson Woods
Hampson Woods

Hampson Woods

Hampson Woods evolved as a pairing of woodworker, Jonty Hampson and artist, Sascha Gravenstein. Together they design and create bespoke interiors and produce hand made, small-batch products. With the same admiration for timber, they respect its grace and the use it can offer – they encourage its natural warmth and highlight the beauty which it has finally grown to. This ensures that their work is pleasing to the hand, and to the eye – a pleasure to make, and a pleasure for you to use. Jonty is a carpenter and cabinet maker. He has worked mainly in the UK and North America, drawing from different approaches and techniques to construction and design. Regardless of place and period, it has always been about the wood, and how people live around it. Sascha comes from a fine art background, with particular interest in landscape and sculptural form. After working in film he moved into the design industry and has worked for various agencies over the years. With woodland in Cumbria, Hampson Woods has access to precious raw material. This means that the provenance of much of these pieces is known – a rare treat to know where your product originally had its roots. Other timbers are sourced from a carefully selected merchant who we work with on account of their patient, sustainable approach. We insist on knowing the provenance for every piece we acquire. We also source from arborists in and around London who specialise in clearing the fallen giants of this city. Saved from chipping, these timbers are planked and allowed to dry over time. They then make it to a dusty workshop in Hackney, where after much consideration these pieces are carefully finished and made ready for new life in people’s homes.
